Smile design

Smile design is the treatment applied to have a natural smile, which is an essential condition of self-confidence and effective impression in social life, in these times when aesthetics has become a prioritized expectation among patients in recent years.

In addition to the treatment of dental cavities, cleaning / removal of tartars, application of prosthetic teeth to replace any missing teeth, many patients visit dentists with complaints of crowded and crooked teeth, and discoloration.

What is an Aesthetic Smile?

Despite being a relative concept, aesthetics means natural beauty by definition. Many factors play a role in smile aesthetics; such as teeth, gums, visibility of the teeth, and colour…

Patients are not aware of how much the gums can be seen while laughing. Research show that individuals found smiles with gingival visibility of more than 3-4 mm aesthetically unpleasant even though they could not explain the reason why. The upper jaw front teeth provide a more natural appearance when they imitate the patient’s square, triangular or oval face form. In order to preserve what is natural, newly-manufactured composite and porcelain materials with light transmittance similar to natural teeth are preferred in dental treatments.

Gingivoplasty to reduce visibility of the gums, tooth whitening, aesthetic composite fillings, porcelain veneers, zirconium veneers, porcelain laminates are the main treatment methods we prefer for patients with aesthetic problems.

As a Practice That Has Become Popular in the Recent Years, What is Smile Design?

Before talking about smile design, we should explain why and how we perform aesthetic dental analysis. The most important stage of treatment is analysis. The positions, shapes, colours and sizes of the upper and lower teeth with respect to one another are examined. First of all, diagnostic models of the patient are obtained with traditional measurement methods or intraoral scanners. Intraoral, extraoral, smile and profile pictures are taken. Considering the patient’s complaints and expectations, the digital design stage is initiated. All the records obtained are combined using digital smile design programs. Drawings and adjustments can be made on pictures and three-dimensional records in these programs. The operations to be performed are applied on the digital model created, and digital pictures similar to the results of the treatment are created. Using smile design, pictures that resemble the most to the result of the treatment are obtained before the operations are applied on the patients. Models imitating the result of the treatment are developed through procedures conducted on diagnostic models in laboratory. Temporary materials are used in the patient’s mouth for application, which is a procedure called “mock up”.

With the advancement of the technology, we offer our patients the chance to assess what can be applied on their teeth both photographically and prosthetically at the clinic without applying any actual procedure.
